Lilac

Nine-year-old Lilac lives in difficult circumstances with her aunt and uncle in a run-down apartment. Burdened by her uncle’s gambling problem, the family faces mounting financial stress. When plans are made to separate Lilac from her beloved cat, Cornbread, she becomes determined to hold onto the only sense of home she knows.

With help from her friend Nancy, Lilac makes a bold decision to run away in search of a better life. Their journey across the city is far more challenging than anticipated, marked by harsh nights and growing uncertainty. Lilac continues on alone, holding onto hope as she heads toward the only people she believes might help—friends of her grandmother.

As Lilac’s situation worsens, she encounters both hardship and unexpected kindness. Taken in by a new family, she begins to experience a sense of belonging for the first time. Her past and future collide when she must face her fears about being returned to the life she fled, only to discover that her new path may offer the stability and love she’s missing.

About The Author

Mary Ruth Reed credits home-schooling in the early grades for her love of reading and her interest in poems, articles and novels. As well as teaching an appreciation of outdoor activities to their five children, (Jim, Ruth, Jean, Bob and Charles) her parents also encouraged them to use their imagination to create ideas, which has been a strong influence of her work. Since the early nineties Ruth has lived on the old family property at Larder Lake in Northern Ontario, Canada.
